On this week’s Wednesday Wellness, Sally Wagstaff was joined by Justine Halifax of Angel Media to discuss ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), more commonly known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
The discussion offered a thoughtful look at a condition that, while often misunderstood, can have a significant impact on daily life. Justine shared her personal experience as a parent, explaining that her daughter was diagnosed as a young teenager and continues to manage the condition at 18.
Sally also spoke openly about her own experience living with ME, highlighting the challenges many people face in accessing clear guidance and support following diagnosis.
The conversation explored a range of possible causes and contributing factors. While post-viral fatigue is widely recognised, other links are increasingly being discussed, including conditions such as endometriosis and adenomyosis. The programme also touched on emerging understanding around neurodiversity, with burnout related to ADHD and autism now considered a potential contributing factor in some cases.
There is also ongoing research into how mitochondrial function may play a role in energy production within the body, helping to explain the fatigue and “energy crashes” often experienced by those living with the condition.
While awareness continues to grow, both Sally and Justine highlighted the importance of continued research, support, and open conversation. Organisations such as the ME Association and Action for ME provide valuable resources for those seeking further information and support.
The discussion formed part of National Neurodiversity Week, making it a particularly timely topic. Lichfield Radio will be continuing the conversation in the coming weeks, with further guests set to explore autism, ADHD, and related subjects in more depth.
It was an absolute pleasure to be invited to feature on Lichfield Radio as part of a health and wellbeing chat with Sally Wagstaff about chronic fatigue.
We also discussed its links to neurodiversity, as I’m a parent of a daughter with both diagnoses of CFS and autism (ASC) – a particularly poignant conversation given that its Neurodiversity Celebration Week this week.
Huge thanks to Sally and to our Snoozy Breakfast host, Ruth Redgate, for allowing me to be part of the show and the fabulous Lichfield Radio venture. – Justine Halifax, Angel Media
