Lichfield Gospel Choir are busy rehearsing for some exciting summer projects!
Firstly, they would like to invite you to experience the energy and warmth of an uplifting concert of gospel, African and soul music on Friday 17 July (7.30pm) at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Lichfield, WS13 7NH.
The Choir are covering the concert costs themselves and offering tickets on a ‘Pay What You Can’ basis. Under 25s can attend free of charge. All proceeds will go to St Giles Hospice to support their amazing work in the local community.
Following this, the Choir are also running a gospel singing workshop. This will be led by Themba Mvula, Baritone and Musical Director of the group, and Gabriella Liandu, mezzo soprano and Associate Musical Director. It is on Saturday 18 July from 10am–1pm, also at Saints Peter and Paul Church, and is designed especially for people who aren’t already choir members. It’s a brilliant opportunity to experience the joy of gospel singing in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
As well as these local concerts, the choir is taking part in the prestigious Community Spirit event at Symphony Hall on Sunday 26 July. This is an acclaimed mass singing project featuring nine community choirs from across the Midlands.
Lichfield Gospel Choir will be performing their own material and singing in the premier performance of a new commission by Ken Burton called Gospel Reels. Commissioned by Black Voices, the Gospel Reels are made up of several pieces exploring the journey of Black Spiritual Song.
Themba Mvula said “it feels great to be taking part in Community Spirit again this year”.
The project is a big part of our story and the performance on the day always has a really special feel — there’s something about all the different choirs coming together and sharing their love of singing that feels very wholesome and inspiring.
Ken Burton is an acclaimed British performer, composer and producer who appears regularly on shows such as BBCs Songs of Praise as a conductor and singer. Performing his new composition at Symphony Hall is a real honour for Lichfield Gospel Choir.
Themba continues:
We’re especially excited to be performing Ken Burton’s new piece Gospel Reels. We already perform a number of his pieces in our regular sets, but this is an exploration of the different styles within gospel music in really short bursts, so it’s extra fun! And performing with Black Voices and accompanied by a group of musicians from Birmingham Conservatoire will make it a real treat for us.
The Community Spirit concert takes place at Symphony Hall on Sunday 26 July at 4pm.
