Lichfield Litter Legends have been helping to keep the streets, parks and green spaces of Lichfield District clean and welcoming since October 2019.
Since the group began recording its activity at the start of 2021, volunteers have collected an impressive 22,607 bags of litter, equating to more than 158 tonnes of rubbish removed from the local environment.
The volunteer-led group now has 430 registered members, with between 30 and 40 people regularly taking part in daily litter picks across the district.
As well as general litter picking, dedicated teams care for the eight “Welcome to Lichfield” signs on the main entry roads into the city, helping to ensure visitors receive a warm and tidy welcome.
A familiar face at many events is the group’s mascot, Lennie the hedgehog, who reminds volunteers and residents alike that litter picking also helps protect local wildlife. Discarded litter can cause serious harm to animals if left in the environment.
Education is also a key part of the Lichfield Litter Legends’ work. Volunteers take Lennie’s book into primary schools to help children understand the impact of litter on the environment and wildlife. The group also delivers talks and organises litter picks with local companies, schools, and Squirrel, Beaver, Cub and Scout groups throughout the area.
