A Lichfield-based mental health counsellor is marking a significant milestone with the publication of a deeply personal poetry collection, created to offer hope and reassurance to those experiencing depression.
Already a published author, Sheila McMahon will launch her second book, Behind Closed Doors, at the Lichfield Garrick next month. The collection features poems written during periods of depression in her teenage years, alongside more recent reflections.
Through sharing her work, Sheila hopes to help others feel less alone and to encourage more open conversations around mental health.
A person can feel very alone with feelings of guilt and shame when in episodes of depression. I am sharing my poems from a time when I felt those feelings to highlight that there is no shame in feeling how we really feel. – Sheila McMahon
Sheila’s collection explores her personal journey, including her experiences of counselling and the path that led her to become a counsellor herself—supporting others through similar challenges.
I was helped when I needed it, and I am simply passing that on.
I hope that by sharing these poems, including those written during my darkest times, I can offer others hope and encouragement to find a way through. – Sheila McMahon
Alongside more reflective pieces, the anthology also includes poems inspired by important people, places, and life events, as well as lighter moments influenced by Sheila’s background in comedy.
The book will be officially unveiled at an invite-only launch event on Saturday, April 4th, at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre lounge.
Support for the launch has been provided by Malcolm Bembridge of MB Roofing and Property Maintenance, who has previously featured on Sheila’s “Counsellor Convos” YouTube series discussing men’s mental health.
I can resonate with Sheila’s work in helping people, and I want to support her. – Malcolm Bembridge
