Accountant publishes book to help business owners stop guessing and start deciding

The Three Pillars of Smart Finance is structured around three areas that most businesses get wrong.

Paul Barnes, founder of Cloud Accounting Support Services (CASS) has published The Three Pillars of Smart Finance, a practical guide for business owners who want to understand what their numbers are actually telling them.

Written for owner managers rather than accountants, the book sets out how to use financial information to answer the questions business owners genuinely wrestle with: can I afford to recruit, why is cash tight when we are profitable, should I invest, and what happens if we lose a major customer.

Paul founded CASS in 2017 on the belief that business owners deserve more from their accountant than a set of year end accounts and a tax bill. Nearly a decade of conversations with SME owners across the Midlands and beyond became the raw material for the book.

The Three Pillars of Smart Finance is structured around three areas that most businesses get wrong:

  • Turning accounting into insight.

Most businesses have accounting information. Far fewer use it. The book looks at moving beyond what happened last year towards understanding what is happening now, which numbers actually matter, and why not all growth is good growth.

  • Designing a capital strategy.

Growth costs money, whether that is recruitment, equipment, stock or expansion. The book makes the case for planning how growth will be funded long before cash gets tight.

  • Shifting from dependency to resilience.

Many successful businesses carry a hidden weakness: they depend too heavily on one person, usually the owner. The final section covers reducing single points of failure, building better processes, and creating a regular rhythm for reviewing performance.

Paul said “I have spent years talking to business owners about the decisions they need to make, and very rarely is the real question about accounting”.

It is about whether they can afford to recruit, whether they should invest, why cash is tight, or what they need to do to take the business forward.

I wanted to put those conversations into something any business owner could pick up and use. If it helps one person ask a better question or avoid a costly mistake, it was worth writing.

The book extends the philosophy that has shaped CASS since it was founded: accounting should not just tell you what happened, it should help you decide what happens next.

The Three Pillars of Smart Finance is available to purchase from Amazon for £14.99 paperback or £9.99 kindle version.
