The focus on listening skills, storytelling and imagination are such rich elements for children.
The Lunar Listeners’ Club is a half hour poetry and storytelling podcast for anyone who likes poems and stories, aimed at primary school children and early high school years – but grown-ups are welcome too!
Episodes one-five are currently available on The Lunar Listeners’ Club show page to listen back to online. They feature a mixture of poems written by myself, a Beatrix Potter story and an extract from The Magic Dragon, written by Baldwin S Harvey. These episodes need to be listened to in order, so that there is continuity of the story.
As part of the podcast, I write a wide range of poems and invite the children to consider the style, structure and rhymes and then write poems of their own. I also like to ask children questions about the stories they have heard, such as how it makes them feel and what would they write if they could continue the story. And inspirational quotes are found about reading from people that children will connect with. So far there have been ‘Wise Words’ for the listeners from Taylor Swift, Julia Donaldson, Dr Seuss, Michael Rosen, Anissa Trisdianty and more!
But now, I have been recording some Lunar Listeners’ Club SPECIAL shows. These are one-off shows that can be listened to on their own and feature a wide variety of exciting guests!
So far, shows have been recorded with Liz Leyshon on using the library, Sue Hansard (a local author) sharing her Little Black Dog and animal stories. There are more ‘Specials’ to come featuring chat, story analysis and writing tips from many storytellers and local authors, as well as paint-along podcasts with local artists … AND MUCH MORE!
I have recently enjoyed getting out and about and doing storytelling and craft sessions based on my book, Hector The Hermit Crab Finds a New Home, including with Burntwood and Armitage Beavers, and again soon at Lichfield, Tamworth and other local libraries during the summer holidays.
