On a chilly Tuesday evening in Lichfield, the warmth came not from the weather, but from the impressive creativity on display at The Top Hat Spoken Word Open Mic Night in the Lichfield Garrick Studio.
The format is simple but highly effective. Speakers are invited to put their names into the hat — a rather splendid top hat, in this case and when their name is drawn, they step up to deliver their chosen piece. It might be a poem or a short story, finished or still in progress, but the emphasis is firmly on providing a relaxed, non-pressured platform for writers to have their work heard.
What really stands out is how supportive the atmosphere feels. There is no judgement or competitiveness; whether someone is just starting out or is an accomplished writer, the overall vibe is encouraging, inclusive and welcoming.
Speaking in front of an audience is never easy, particularly when that audience includes fellow writers. However, the informal nature of the evening helps to break down nerves, making it feel more like a conversation among friends. Every contribution was engaging — sometimes funny, sometimes sad or reflective, but all captured moments that deserved to be shared.
Despite flooding on the A38 preventing a few people from attending, there was still a lovely mix of speakers on the night, including some first-timers, and the two hours flew by.
The Top Hat Spoken Word nights take place every other month at the Lichfield Garrick Theatre. Audience members are welcome to simply sit and listen, or to put their name in the hat and take to the mic themselves. At just £3 per session, it’s an accessible and affordable way to enjoy local creativity.
The evenings are run by Lichfield writer Joss Musgrove-Knibb and form part of her Word Perfect Creative Writing Group, based in Lichfield.
