What’s Vision Got to Do With It?

Simplifying the journey of becoming the greatest version of you

Each New Year, billions of people set resolutions to save money, get healthier or make positive changes. I’ve been one of them and I imagine you have too.

It won’t surprise you to learn that 92% of New Year’s resolutions fail. After a few days or weeks, discipline slips. One drink won’t hurt. I’ll skip the gym today. I’ll start tomorrow.

Often, it’s not because we don’t want change, but because our goals are vague, unrealistic or unsupported by a plan. And that’s not a failure. It’s human nature. We’re simply not wired to choose lettuce leaves and icy morning runs over comfort and familiarity.

But what if achieving your goals didn’t have to feel so hard?

What is vision?

When most people think about “vision”, they think of a 70s-clad boardroom smelling of coffee and Old Spice, where a few corporate sentences are created, pinned to dusty noticeboards and largely ignored for years.

Or perhaps it brings to mind a Mystic Meg lookalike on Blackpool Pier promising you’ll marry a millionaire next year (I’m still waiting).

But vision can be personal. It’s about seeing something you like the idea of and intentionally moving towards it.

Think of vision as the future version of you or your business that makes you say, “Oh yes please, I’ll have some of that.”

It’s shaped by your strengths, values, purpose and passion. Your north star guiding you towards success that feels right for you.

Vision needs goals

Vision without goals rarely materialises. Goals help keep you on track, but they need to be realistic and sustainable.

That’s where SMARTERR goals come in: goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound, with time built in to evaluate, review and reward progress.

Small steps matter. Consistency beats intensity every time.

Habits, not motivation

Every successful person’s secret isn’t motivation — it’s consistent, sustainable habits.

Start small. Ridiculously small. Build momentum. Make habits easy, repeatable and realistic.

And expect resistance. Imposter syndrome, procrastination and self-doubt are all part of the process. They exist to keep us safe, but they don’t have to keep us stuck.

Support matters

No one achieves meaningful change alone. Statistically, we’re far more likely to reach our goals when we have support, accountability and encouragement along the way.

So ask yourself: what change do you actually want to make?

Because when your vision is clear, your goals are realistic and your habits are supported, progress becomes possible and sustainable.
