Why September might be the best month to travel

It is no surprise that September holidays are becoming increasingly popular with British travellers.

September. The month when summer starts to fade at home, the children head back to school and, for many of us, the holiday season feels like it is over. But perhaps September is actually the perfect time to pack your suitcase.

Often described as the shoulder-season sweet spot, September offers many of the things we love about summer – warm weather, beautiful beaches and long evenings – but with fewer crowds and, in many destinations, better value. It is no surprise that September holidays are becoming increasingly popular with British travellers.

The sunshine picks – summer isn’t over yet

If you are chasing one last dose of sunshine, the Mediterranean is still very much open for business.

The Greek Islands are one of my favourite September recommendations. Crete, Rhodes and Corfu can remain beautifully warm, while the atmosphere is generally more relaxed once the peak summer crowds have disappeared. The sea has had all summer to warm up too, making September perfect for swimming, boat trips and lazy beach days.

Turkey is another fantastic choice, particularly the Turquoise Coast around Antalya, Dalaman and Fethiye. Temperatures remain warm, the sea is inviting and resorts can feel considerably calmer than during July and August.

Portugal’s Algarve is also a September winner. With spectacular beaches, charming towns and plenty of sunshine, it works equally well for a relaxing week by the pool or an active escape exploring the coastline.

And don’t overlook Croatia. Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian Coast remain beautiful in September, while the slightly cooler temperatures make exploring historic towns and islands much more enjoyable.

Something different — September adventures

September isn’t just about lying on a beach.

If you want a holiday packed with culture and adventure, Cappadocia in Turkey is an unforgettable option. Its extraordinary rock formations and underground cities are best explored when temperatures are more comfortable, and clear September mornings can provide the perfect conditions for one of those iconic hot-air-balloon experiences.

For something truly long-haul, Japan is another destination worth considering. Kyoto becomes more comfortable as the summer heat and humidity ease, while the city offers temples, gardens, traditional tea houses and cultural experiences around every corner.

September is also a great time to start thinking beyond the obvious destinations. Morocco, South Africa and Bali all offer completely different experiences, whether you are looking for culture, wildlife, adventure or relaxation.

Closer to home – don’t rule out the UK

You don’t have to board a plane to enjoy a September escape.

The Cotswolds are beautiful at this time of year, with quieter villages, countryside walks and the first hints of autumn colour. A weekend exploring places such as Broadway, Bourton-on-the-Water or Castle Combe can make a wonderful mini-break.

September is also a fantastic month for a UK food or walking break. With the summer crowds disappearing, you can slow down, explore at your own pace and enjoy some of Britain’s beautiful countryside.

My top tips for September travel

Be flexible with your dates. Once the school holidays are over, travelling midweek rather than at weekends can sometimes make a noticeable difference to flight and hotel prices.

Don’t assume everywhere is cheaper. September is becoming increasingly popular, so sought-after destinations can still be expensive. Book early if you have your heart set on a particular hotel or island.

Check the weather for your exact destination. September can be wonderfully warm in southern Europe, but conditions vary considerably across regions. The further south you go, generally the better your chances of guaranteed warmth.

Pack for two seasons. Even somewhere hot during the day can feel surprisingly cool in the evening. A lightweight cardigan or jacket takes up very little room and could become your most-used item.

Make the most of quieter sightseeing. September is ideal for exploring cities and attractions without the intense heat of midsummer. Start early, take your time and enjoy lunch somewhere away from the main tourist streets.

Travel insurance is still essential. It is easy to think that a short European break doesn’t need much planning, but unexpected cancellations, medical treatment or lost luggage can turn a dream trip into an expensive headache.

And finally, don’t write September off as the end of summer. In many parts of the world, it is when the best of the season begins – warm seas, calmer beaches, beautiful scenery and a little more room to breathe.

So, whether you’re dreaming of a Greek island, a Turkish adventure, a European city break or a cosy weekend closer to home, September could be the perfect time to go.

Most importantly? Don’t wait for the perfect time to travel. Sometimes the best adventures happen when everyone else thinks summer is already over.
