October escapes – Where to go when autumn arrives

October has plenty to offer!

October. The leaves are changing, the evenings are getting darker and the first signs of winter are creeping in – but that doesn’t mean the sunshine has disappeared.

In fact, October can be one of the most rewarding months to travel. Across southern Europe and beyond, temperatures can still be warm enough for a beach day, while cities and countryside destinations become far more comfortable to explore without the peak-summer crowds.

Whether you want one last dose of sunshine, an autumn city break or a completely different adventure, October has plenty to offer.

Chase the sunshine

If your idea of October is still sunshine and a suitcase packed with swimwear, look south.

The Canary Islands are a fantastic choice for reliable autumn warmth, with Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura offering beaches, volcanic landscapes and plenty to do beyond the pool. Cyprus is another strong option, with warm temperatures and a sea that has had all summer to heat up.

Turkey’s Turquoise Coast around Antalya, Dalaman and Fethiye can also stay beautifully warm in October, while Crete and Rhodes offer a final taste of the Greek island season with fewer visitors than during the height of summer.

For something a little different, Madeira combines warm weather with spectacular scenery. It is particularly appealing if you enjoy walking, food and exploring rather than spending every day on a beach.

If you want seriously warm weather, Egypt is worth considering. Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada offer sunshine, warm Red Sea waters and excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving.

The perfect month for a city break

October is also a brilliant time to explore European cities.

Rome, Seville, Lisbon and Dubrovnik are all more comfortable for sightseeing once the intense summer heat has eased. You can spend the morning exploring historic streets and landmarks, stop for a long lunch and still have plenty of time to enjoy an evening outside.

Dubrovnik is particularly appealing in autumn. The summer crowds have thinned, making it easier to wander the Old Town, enjoy the coastline and take in the views without the intensity of peak season.

And if you love food and culture, October is a wonderful excuse for a European city break. Cooler temperatures mean you can walk further, explore more and actually enjoy being outside.

Embrace autumn

If sunshine isn’t your priority, October opens up a completely different side of travel.

Central Europe can be spectacular as the leaves begin to turn. Prague, Vienna and the Bavarian region of Germany offer beautiful architecture, cosy cafes, hearty food and that unmistakable autumn atmosphere.

Munich is also home to Oktoberfest, although if you are planning a trip specifically for the festival, check the exact dates and book well in advance as demand can be high.

Closer to home, Scotland, the Lake District and the Cotswolds can be beautiful in October. Think crisp walks, cosy pubs, changing leaves and countryside escapes. Sometimes you don’t need a long-haul flight to feel like you’ve had a proper break.

Tips for October travel

Be realistic about the weather. October is a transition month, so conditions can vary. If guaranteed sunshine is important to you, choose destinations further south or consider long-haul options.

Pack layers. Even warm destinations can have cooler mornings and evenings, while city breaks can involve much more walking than a traditional beach holiday.

Check your hotel’s seasonal facilities. Some resorts reduce their entertainment, restaurant opening hours or facilities towards the end of the season, so check before booking if particular amenities are important to you.

If you’re travelling during October half term, book early. Family-friendly destinations and convenient flight times can fill quickly, and prices can rise around the school holiday dates.

Make the most of ‘shoulder season’. One of the biggest advantages of October is being able to explore popular destinations at a different pace. Attractions can be less crowded and the cooler temperatures make sightseeing much more enjoyable.

Don’t forget travel insurance and check your entry requirements before you go. Passport validity, visas and other requirements can vary by destination.

Most importantly, don’t think of October as the end of the travel year. It can be the month when you discover a completely different side of a destination.

From warm Mediterranean beaches and Red Sea sunshine to colourful European cities and crisp countryside walks, there is an October escape for almost every kind of traveller.

So whether you’re chasing the sun, embracing autumn or simply looking for a reason to get away, October might be the perfect time to pack your suitcase.
