Community Consultation Launched to Guide Improvements to a Well-Loved Local Green Space.
Residents are being invited to share their views on plans to improve Christian Fields, a much-loved green space at the heart of the local community.
Lichfield District Council is working with local partners, including Liberty Jamboree, the Friends of Christian Fields, Lichfield City Council and local ward councillors, to develop a shared vision for enhancing the space off Eastern Avenue so that more people can enjoy, value and benefit from it.
Christian Fields plays an important role in supporting walking, play, dog exercise and time spent in nature. With the new leisure centre nearby, there is also an opportunity to better connect physical wellbeing, outdoor activity and the natural environment for residents of all ages.
The ambition is to improve the quality, accessibility and facilities across the site, with a strong focus on creating a space that is welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
Early progress is already underway. Funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund has enabled the restoration of the upper staircases, with further improvements to the lower stairs planned for later this year. Work is also taking place to enhance the main entrance, improving access for wheelchair users, people with mobility aids and families with pushchairs.
Lichfield City Council has also supported improvements on the site, including upgrades to steps and the lower car park, alongside wider maintenance and access enhancements.
Future plans being explored include improving pathways, enhancing signage, creating new habitats to support biodiversity, and developing inclusive outdoor learning and play opportunities in partnership with Liberty Jamboree. Improvements to the underpass linking the leisure centre to Christian Fields are also being considered.
Christian Fields is a valued green space for our community, and we want to build on the improvements already underway to make it even more accessible, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
We’re working closely with local partners and community groups to develop a shared vision for the site, and it’s really important that residents help shape what happens next. – Councillor Phil Whitehouse, Cabinet Member for Operational Services
Whether you use the space regularly or not, we’d encourage everyone to take a few minutes to share their views and help us create a space that works for the whole community. – Dan Floyd, Founder of Friends of Christian Fields
Accessible, welcoming outdoor spaces are incredibly important for children, young people and families, especially those with additional needs.
Christian Fields has the potential to offer inclusive opportunities for play, learning and spending time together outdoors, and we’re really pleased to be part of shaping that vision. – Maggi Huckfield, CEO at Liberty Jamboree
We’re proud to support improvements to Christian Fields, helping to enhance access and ensure this important green space can be enjoyed by the whole community.
Working in partnership, we’re committed to investing in local spaces that bring people together and support residents’ wellbeing, and we’d encourage residents and visitors to share their views to help shape what comes next. – Councillor Colin Ball, Lichfield City Councillor for Curborough Ward
