The Lichfield Garrick Studio is currently playing host to a true festive highlight, where Shoddy Theatre is unleashing a torrent of holiday hysteria in their brilliantly unhinged production of A Shoddy Christmas Carol.
If you’re looking for high art, look elsewhere; if you’re looking for comedy gold the kind that makes your cheeks ache from laughing this is the perfect night out!
This isn’t just a seasonal spectacular; it’s a magnificent mess. The brilliant premise finds the show in jeopardy when the main cast fails to show up. What follows is a desperate, chaotic, and lightning-fast attempt by a panicked stage manager, one remaining actor, and a deluded director to save the night by frantically improvising a retelling of Dickens’ classic.
The stage is a whirlwind of slapstick seasonal spectacular. We’re talking malfunctioning props, hilariously questionable accents, quick changes gone wrong, and a set that seems to have a mind of its own. The humour is fast-paced, physical, and relentlessly silly, ensuring that the audience is laughing at almost every turn.
What elevates this farce from funny to unforgettable is the brilliant audience participation. The Shoddy Theatre troupe seamlessly weaves the crowd into their chaos, treating them less like spectators and more like emergency backup performers.
A special shout-out must go to the night’s brave volunteer, Keith, who, much to the audience’s delight, was brought onto the stage to become an integral (and often bewildered) part of the action! This spontaneous, unscripted interaction is the heart of the show’s unique charm and ramps up the hilarity, making every performance genuinely unique.
In short, A Shoddy Christmas Carol is a triumphant, hilarious disaster. It’s a night of laughter, a perfect way to lighten the mood, and the ideal tonic to get you perfectly settled and in the mood for Christmas.
