A Whale of a Summer brings ocean wonders to Lichfield Cathedral

This is one of Staffordshire’s most accessible and memorable summer attractions.

Visitors to Lichfield Cathedral are being invited to dive into an unforgettable summer experience as the historic landmark unveils ‘A Whale of a Summer’, a programme of art, photography, family fun and thought-provoking events running from 23 July to 31 August.

Transforming the Cathedral into an immersive celebration of the world’s oceans, the event combines spectacular visual installations with interactive activities, encouraging visitors of all ages to reflect on the beauty of marine life and the importance of protecting our natural environment.

At the heart of the programme is Whales, an extraordinary installation by acclaimed artist Tessa Campbell Fraser. Three giant sperm whale sculptures appear to glide through the Cathedral’s magnificent nave, creating a breathtaking contrast between the medieval architecture and contemporary environmental art. Crafted from recycled ghost fishing nets, silk chiffon and latex, the sculptures highlight the devastating impact of plastic pollution and climate change on marine ecosystems while celebrating the power of creativity to inspire positive change.

Complementing the installation is the internationally renowned Ocean Photographer of the Year 2025 exhibition. Featuring more than 100 award-winning images, the display showcases the incredible diversity of life beneath the waves, from colourful coral reefs and elusive sea creatures to powerful moments of human interaction with the ocean. The exhibition offers visitors a rare glimpse into underwater worlds while reinforcing the importance of ocean conservation.

Families are particularly well catered for throughout the summer. The Fin-tastic Families programme invites children to create sea creature crafts that will become part of a growing underwater display, while the free Journey with Jonah trail encourages young explorers to discover the Cathedral through games, storytelling and interactive challenges inspired by the biblical tale of Jonah and the Whale. A spectacular Whale Send Off celebration on 31 August will mark the end of the summer activities, bringing together hundreds of handcrafted sea creatures in a colourful community display.

Visitors can also enjoy the return of The Beach at Lichfield Cathedral, now a much-loved annual tradition. Buckets, spades and sandcastles bring a seaside atmosphere to the Cathedral Close, creating the perfect opportunity for families to relax and enjoy a day out in the heart of the city.

Beyond the exhibitions and family activities, A Whale of a Summer also offers opportunities for reflection and discussion. The Wisdom from the Waves programme explores the remarkable link between whales and humans as two of the few species known to experience menopause, using this fascinating biological connection to encourage conversations about wellbeing, community and the value of shared life experience.

The event forms part of Lichfield Cathedral’s wider Human Hands theme for 2026, exploring how humanity has the ability both to nurture and to damage the natural world. Through art, photography and community engagement, A Whale of a Summer encourages visitors to consider how each of us can play a part in caring for the planet.

Whether you’re drawn by the awe-inspiring whale sculptures, the stunning photography, family activities or simply the chance to experience one of England’s most beautiful cathedrals in a unique new way, A Whale of a Summer promises an inspiring day out for visitors of every age.

Admission to the exhibitions can be made by donation, making this one of Staffordshire’s most accessible and memorable summer attractions.
