Mark your calendars, Lichfield Greenhill Bower returns on Bank Holiday Monday, 25th May 2026, and it promises to be a spectacular day of colour, history, music and family fun right in the heart of our city.
The Bower is a community event that dates back to 1145, making it one of the oldest continuing traditions not just in Lichfield, but in the whole country. Its origins lie in a statute of Henry II, which ordered that all able-bodied men capable of bearing arms should be inspected by the magistrates. Today it’s an occasion the whole city comes together to celebrate , and this year looks set to be as memorable as ever.
The Procession
The highlight of the morning is, of course, the famous procession. It starts at Cherry Orchard from 11:45am, stopping outside The Guildhall for the crowning of the Bower Monarch at noon. Expect carnival floats, musicians, dancers and the Bower Queen with her entourage, and morris dancers holding aloft the Bower greenery. This year’s Bower Queen is the returning Katie Adams, who will once again be crowned in style outside the Guildhall.
Before the procession gets underway, the traditional Court of Arraye takes place in the Guildhall at 10:30am, a quirky and wonderfully theatrical ceremony where the Mayor inspects a group of men in medieval armour to assess the city’s readiness for battle. It’s free to attend, but spaces inside the Guildhall are limited so arrive early!
Markets at Minster Pool Walk
As the procession winds through the city streets, the beautiful surroundings of Minster Pool Walk will be buzzing with market stalls, bringing a wonderful festive atmosphere to one of Lichfield’s most picturesque spots. With stunning views across the pool towards the Cathedral as your backdrop, it’s the perfect setting to browse, grab a treat, and enjoy the day. The Fair and Entertainment in Beacon Park
Lichfield’s Beacon Park comes alive with lots for everyone to enjoy, with fairground attractions provided by Pat Collins Funfair, charity stalls, arts and crafts, and play areas for the little ones. The park is open from 11am to 5pm, and entry is completely free so there’s no excuse not to come along and make a day of it!
And for dog lovers, the ever-popular Bower Dog Show is back in the park! Whether your four-legged friend is a pedigree champion or magnificently scruffy, get them entered and see how they fare. Check the Bower website and Facebook page for entry details.

Whether you are a solo singer, a band, a dance troupe, or a performance act, this is your chance to perform in front of a fantastic crowd in the heart of Lichfield. The organisers are looking for acts of all kinds — music, dance, and performance that reflect the spirit and diversity of our wonderful community.
